    Supporting the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework and Welsh Government’s Qualified for Life — Focus on Science

    Techniquest provides a unique experience – supporting teachers and inspiring pupils from Foundation Phase to Post-16 in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – at our Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff Bay and through a broad and dynamic Outreach programme, which can bring the Techniquest experience to your school.

    At Techniquest in Cardiff Bay, there are more than 120 hands-on exhibits, which are ideal for child-centred learning and investigation.

    Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 pupils who visit Techniquest can also attend an interactive show in the Science Theatre, or visit Techniquest’s digital Planetarium, where they will be inspired by a view of the night sky. Key Stage 2 and secondary pupils can also take part in a series of workshops in the Laboratory, which allows pupils to gain hands-on practical experience.

    All programmes are linked to the Curriculum for Wales. Teachers receive resource materials to help them extend the learning back in the classroom.

    School visits are so well organised that teachers can simply focus on the learning experience; upon arrival, Techniquest staff explain the logistics of the visit to make sure the day runs smoothly.

    Areas can be reserved for pupils to have packed lunches, and Café Quest serves drinks and snacks on-site.

    We welcome teachers to visit Techniquest, free of charge, at any time during opening hours, to help in planning their visit – please advise our staff at the admissions desk when you arrive, and they will be happy to process your free entry.
  • Foundation Phase

    Supporting the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework

    All Foundation Phase programmes cover the seven areas of learning, providing a balance between presenter-directed learning and child-initiated activities. The programmes are presented with the help of Delyth, a cheeky and inquisitive young dragon, who is on hand to help answer questions and inspire pupils in science and mathematics.

    Each programme consists of a Science Theatre show, time on the exhibition floor amongst the 120 hands-on exhibits and practical activities in Delyth’s Den, plus pre- and post-visit materials, thereby offering teachers a complete package of activities to support their teaching.

    Each lively presentation in the Science Theatre lasts approximately 25 minutes, after which pupils explore the exhibition floor. Here they are guided by their own curiosity, and engage with a variety of interactive exhibits that encourage them to experiment.

    Pupils will have time to explore skills and ideas introduced in the Science Theatre through the additional activities in Delyth’s Den.

  • Supporting the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework

    All KS2 programmes support the teaching of the Curriculum for Wales, encouraging skills development and learning through investigation, discussion and collaboration.

    After a lively 30-minute presentation in the Science Theatre or Planetarium, pupils take what they have learnt onto the exhibition floor for a session of self-directed learning and discovery. Pupils are armed with a series of key words and phrases that link to the topics of their show, to help them to decide which of the 120 interactive exhibits are most relevant.

    All Techniquest’s hands-on exhibits encourage self-directed learning.

      - Investigate and explore key exhibits with our Literacy and Numeracy Trail - including guidance notes and additional support for teachers;

      - Take part in your own experiment using a specially designed exhibit with our Learning Lab. Pupils can set up and carry out a teacher facilitated scientific investigation in the middle of Techniquest’s exhibition! Guidance notes and support resources for Learning Lab are available for teachers. Booking is essential.
